The Partager project is part of an attempt to provide a computing environment to everyone, which allows people to be free, independent, self-sufficient and in full control. Nobody should have to trust someone they never met (and who has selfish profit interests) to store their (sometimes private) data or provide some services or needs.
One important and significant step on the way there is using community/home servers. It means the only people you your systems trust are the ones you trust. Your family, friends, neighbors, community members. The people in your monkeysphere.
Now, how do you run these servers? Does it mean everyone should have a large PC running 24/7 so that they can do video calls, send-email and search the web? No, that would be more computers, more power usage and thus more air pollution than necessary. And obviously not everyone is interested in computers or servers, just like not everyone is interested in art and painting. It’s enough to have some local community members who run the servers. They directly help provide the community’s needs and are responsible for the more technical maintenance. Sometimes there are less technical tasks, in which other community members may be able to help.
The community services provided as part of this project thus serve the following purposes:
- Provide home and community services (Everyone is welcome to use them! After some chat ;-) )
- Prove it’s possible without serious education or skills, and be a live example
- Help the project members learn how to run (local) servers and understand the difficulties
No hosting services are used! Everything runs here, locally, on home servers. Full control, safety and privacy. 100% free software. Also, no centrally controlled DNS is used. The domain names are provided via OpenNIC, the open democratic DNS (this is why the top-level domain is ‘null’ and not ‘org’ or ‘net’).
